Friday Movie Recommendation!

This week's movie recommendation comes from Cal who recommends the 1982 family/sci-fi film E.T. the Extra-Terrestial. It is the story of a young boy named Elliott who discovers and befriends a lost alien who is stranded on Earth and wants to return home. The movie is available to rent and watch with most major streaming services.
"It's one of the first movies Drew Barrymore did. Steven Spielberg produced and directed it, and it's a good movie if you like aliens." - Cal

Trivia Day Moved to Today
and
Music Club Moving to Garden Club Day
Today we will be holding Trivia Day during our 1 PM Zoom meeting, and the Blessing Bowl will be held during tomorrow's meeting instead. The days are swapped only for this week!
~
Today will also be the final weekly meeting of Garden Club now that the garden has begun to start settling down for the season. Smaller meetings might still be called to address specific issues, but Thursdays at 11 AM will become the new day for Music Club starting next week.
Delta Spirit, "How Bout It"
A Music Video Directed by
Michael Parks Randa
Our special guest on last Tuesday's mystery guest Zoom was none other than the beloved Mikey Randa! He joined us for the entire meeting to chat and answer questions. One of the questions was, "What have you been working on lately?" To that he responded by showing us this, the latest music video he directed.
Due to the pandemic, he was not able to shoot each shot himself and was instead submitted footage from all over the country which he then cobbled together into the video you see today. Look closely at a few shots... you might just recognize a familiar little face.

Weekly A-SIGN-ment!
Tomorrow during our Wednesday 1 PM Zoom meeting we will be sharing another word we've learned in sign language. This week's word theme is Fall! Share with us the sign that has anything to do with the season of Fall!
As usual, feel free to refer to HandSpeak for reference and guidance in finding your word!
Welcoming Autumn
Today is the autumnal equinox! Also know as the first day of Autumn, or Fall. Take a look out your window and see if you can notice any of the leaves already starting to change on the trees. Squirrels and chipmunks have gotten a lot more active lately, and the weather has cooled considerably too. There's no denying that Fall is in the air!
This video provides 15 interesting facts about this season that might help you get into the Fall mood.
Did you know?
Fall tourism, aka “leaf peeping,” brings in big money for New England states.
The seasonal change bring around $3 billion to the small region.
Fall Is caused by the Earth’s tilt, not our distance from the sun.
When the northern hemisphere tilts towards the sun, we get warmer. When it tilts away, we get colder. Fall and spring are the times of transition.
Pumpkin spice has nothing to do with pumpkins.
Pumpkin spice is actually the spice mix used for pumpkin pies. It is made from 3 tablespoons ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoons ground ginger, 2 teaspoons ground nutmeg, 1 ½ teaspoons ground allspice and 1 ½ teaspoons ground cloves. You can make it at home or buy it pre-mixed at the grocery store.

Summer Crafts For
All Year Round
Summer is not over just yet! A fun way to celebrate the last day might be doing some Summer crafts. Of course these are not exclusive to only Summer. If you want to give your creative itch a scratch then it really doesn't matter what time of the year it is. These projects might just make you think of Summer.

Remember when Millis was doing the painted rock hunt? Painted rocks can still be found on the grounds in towns all over and make for really fun and easy projects. This video only gives you a few ideas of what you can paint your rocks to look like. The sky is the limit!
Paint a rock to look like an acorn for a festive Fall centerpiece or paint one Christmas colors and gift it as a paper weight to somebody you love. Painting rocks can and should be an all year round activity.
Check out this video here on how to paint a simple mandala effect onto a rock using paint and Q-tips!
Never miss going to the beach again. This easy ocean in a bottle craft project will let you bring the ocean with you wherever you go. Your own little personal beach day every day!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ABBEY!!
Today is Abbey's birthday, so let's wish her a great one!

Happy
Rosh Hashanah!
Tonight marks the very special first day of the two day holiday Rosh Hashanah, also known as the Jewish New Year! According to the Hebrew calendar, the date will be 5781 as soon as the sun has set.
Yes, you heard that correctly. 5781!
Why is the Hebrew calendar different from our calendar?
The calendar system we most commonly use is called the Gregorian calendar. This is a solar calendar which means that its cycles are based on the solar year.
The Hebrew calendar is a lunar calendar, much like the Islamic calendar. It follows the monthly cycles of the moon rather than the sun. It is also considered a new day as soon as the sun sets which is why so many Jewish holidays actually start the evening prior to their Gregorian calendar dates.
People celebrate Rosh Hashanah by wishing people "shanah tovah u'metukah" or "a good and sweet year." In fact, we make the new year sweet by eating sweet foods specifically. You might have already heard about eating apples with honey. Some people also specifically seek out new fruits and foods to try to celebrate a new beginning!
Here is something both new and sweet for you to try. A super easy and super sweet round honey cake! (It is traditional to eat round things on Rosh Hashanah, but it can be made any shape you like!)
Purple Cup Survey!
You still have until Sunday evening to take the survey! Fill out and submit this form to tell us what's the one food you would like to eat for the rest of your life!

Friday Movie Recommendation!

This week's movie recommendation comes from Phil with the 2010 Disney biographical sports drama Secretariat! It can be watched for free with Disney+ or rented through most major streaming services.
"Secretariat by Disney is about the 1973 Triple Crown winner in horse racing. It came out in 2010. Secretariat is considered to be the greatest horse of all time, and his nickname is Big Red the Horse That God Built. All of his 1973 race records still stand to this day. He won the Belmont 31 lengths ahead of all the other horses." - Phil

LES Summer Reflections
We have just under one more week until the first day of Autumn (it's next Tuesday!). Our Newsletter will be a reflection of our Summers both current and past, but that doesn't mean we can't celebrate it a little bit here too! This has been by far the most unique Summer I think any of us have ever had. Let's look at a few ways we experienced a Summer like no other!

Our garden flourished just as it has since the very first seeds were planted. We reaped bountiful harvests full of vegetables, fruits, flowers, and herbs. Even though they have been having trouble with their posture, our Sunflowers grew huge and tall this year.
Eric went to the garden just about a week ago and captured this incredible shot of the big blossoms towering high in the bright blue sky.
We kept ourselves busy with swimming, Lego, games, projects, and trips. Allison didn't miss LES' Ladder Ball at all because she still got to play it almost daily. They say that practice makes perfect, and I can assure you that those throws have got pinpoint precision!

Many might have forgotten, but at the beginning of Spring we transformed our Little Free Library into a double duty Little Free Food Cupboard too. It's now packed to the brim with non-perishable goods for people in the community to take as they please.
With the colder weather soon approaching once again it might turn into a valuable asset for those in need of food. Come check it out to both take and donate goods (and of course books!).

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, we all stayed connected. We learned, adapted, and thrived in ways that kept us all together doing the things we love to do (and even some new things too!). Blessing Bowl, Field Day, Afternoon Meetings, Yoga, we did it all!
Thank you to everyone in the Life Experience School for making this Summer the most special Summer it could be! You guys rock!
Just remember that this is not a goodbye to Summer. This is a celebration of what our Summer has brought us and a look forward to what the future Summers will bring!

Learning the Instruments
During last Monday's Music Club everybody in attendance got to experience a website featuring information on a vast number of different musical instruments. The instruments range from casual and fun to orchestra staples like the violin, piano, and the bassoon.
One of the coolest parts of the website is this interactive concert. Anywhere you see a small black and white circle you can click to watch a short video and learn about the instrument you clicked on.
There are four basic types of Western musical instruments:
Brass, Woodwinds, Strings, and Percussion!
I bet you wouldn't have considered the Conductor a major part of the orchestra, but as Music Club learned they actually play a much larger part in the grand scheme of the show than you actually think! This video does a great job explaining what a Conductor's job is during a performance.
To check out all of this and more visit the Instrument Families page!
https://www.mrdaviesmusicclass.org/instrument-families.html
Did you know?
The piano is considered both a string and a percussion instrument? It has strings inside its body that are stretched between two points. Their vibrations (which cause the sounds we hear) are activated when hammers also inside the body hit them rather than being plucked or strung by a bow.

Your Brain on
FOOD
You probably have heard the phrase, "You are what you eat." In some ways it's true. No, you won't become a potato chip if you've just indulged in a bag of Lays, but what you may not be aware of is how those chips have a strong effect on your body, including your brain!
This short video explains how different food impacts our brains and how we can go about feeding it right.

"A fun and playful way to learn Braille"
Lego Braille Bricks!

It's almost a match made in Heaven. Who hasn't run their fingers across the top of a Lego brick and silently thought to themself, "These bumps remind me of something." For those who use Braille to read it's pretty much a no-brainer, and it was only a matter of time before Lego finally put the concept to use!
The concept was unveiled back in April of this year at the Sustainable Brands Conference in Paris, France. "Motivated by stories and ideas from blind people around the world, the LEGO Foundation and LEGO Group will pilot a grassroots innovation that can help blind and visually impaired children learn through play using LEGO bricks."
These specialty Lego bricks will be fully compatible with all other Lego systems while having special molded top studs that correspond to letters and numbers in the Braille alphabet. Printed letters and characters are also included on the front of the Lego bricks to ensure both sighted and non-sighted "teachers, students and family members [can] interact on equal terms."
There are 90 different activities on the Lego website that uses the Braille bricks to teach children concepts such as math, fine motor skills, and spelling along with games like Twister and Dominos!

The project is entirely non-profit, and the bricks will be distributed free of charge to schools, institution, and educational systems.
For even more information on the project check out Lego's own website here!

A Stonewalk Touchstone -
Global Pandemics Memorial Stone Engraving

Lewis and the Peace Abbey have been hard at work in preparation of the next Stonewalk. It will carry "The Global Pandemics memorial stone, which commemorates victims of past, present and future pandemics worldwide." The stone was "cut at Ackerman Monument Company in Holliston, Massachusetts on September 9, 2020." - https://vimeo.com/456215097
It will be taken wherever congregations wish to host it until 2021, when hopefully it will be safe to gather people together to pull it to New York City.

Next Art Club Project

Next Tuesday for Art Club we will be learning how to draw a dragon!
Participants will only require a blank piece of paper, a pencil with a good eraser, and a pen or colored pencils/markers to line or color their dragon with!
Friday Movie Recommendation!

This week's movie recommendation comes from Lewis with Brother Sun, Sister Moon. It can be rented across most major streaming platforms.
"This film, released in 1972 (the year I founded The Life Experience School) is one of my favorite films of all times! Directed by Franco Zeffirelli, this masterpiece of inspiration and idealism tells the story of the early life of St. Francis of Assisi and expresses the spirit embodied in The Life Experience School and The Peace Abbey. The Blessing Bowl we dip our fingers in I acquired when I was on a pilgrimage to Assisi, Italy in 1986, and when I returned I started The Peace Abbey. The beautiful song in Italian we play at the start of Meeting is the theme song from the film. Meg and I have watched this movie more times than any other for reasons you’ll discover when you watch it.
Oh Brother Sun, oh Sister Moon, weave for us a garment of brightness!"- Lewis

The Chemistry of Cookies
Do you have a favorite science class? The most popular answers are probably biology, chemistry, or physics, but have you ever considered home economics?
We don't generally think of it as such, but cooking and baking are actually forms of chemistry... that you can eat!
This short video explains the science behind why and how a cookie turns from raw dough into a delicious, crunchy treat and how each ingredient plays a vital role, including the oven!
Okay, say you don't have an oven and you're less looking to do a science experiment than to have a quick bite to eat. Then we have a recipe for you! Cindy provided us with a recipe for Cookie Balls, a simple and no bake snack!
No-Bake Cookie Balls
Ingredients:
1 Cup of Almond Butter or Peanut Butter
1/2 Cup Maple Syrup
1 Pinch of Salt
Dash of Vanilla
1/3 Cup of Quick Oats
Small Handful of Chocolate Chips or Raisins
Mix the wet ingredients and then add everything else. If it's super wet then add a bit more oats, and roll into little balls. Store them in the fridge to firm up!

Shanti says: "I LOVE cookies! If I had thumbs I'd eat the WHOLE BAG!"

Here There Be Castles!

Winnekenni Castle, Haverhill
When you think about castles what first comes to mind? King Arthur's court? Some far off land across the sea? Maybe a dragon? Well, did you know that you might not have to look further than Ipswich to see one of these incredible buildings up close?

Massachusetts castles are few and far between, but they do offer majestic sights that will transport you back in time or to a fantasy land. If you were to take a road trip to visit each of these selected castles (they were chosen to be some of the cream of the crop!) the trip would take you about 5 1/2 hours. Lucky for us quite a few are fairly close by!

The Life of a
Newborn Hummingbird
Do you know what the world's smallest bird is? It is the hummingbird! Or, more specifically, the bee hummingbird, but all hummingbirds are itty bitty versions of those cute songbirds and majestic falcons you see soaring through the skies.
Hummingbirds are so tiny that their nests are only about the size of a quarter or a golf ball and their eggs even smaller. If you can picture eggs that small then try to imagine hummingbird chicks!
When a hummingbird flies by your head its wings are flapping so fast that is almost sounds like a buzz or a hum (hence their name hummingbird). Do not mistake these little guys for a big bee or fly! They are very skittish and shy but also very curious and smart. If you have the chance to see a hummingbird in person there is also a good chance that hummingbird is taking a good gander at you too!
This video shows a mother Rufous hummingbird making her nest, caring for her jelly-bean sized eggs, then nurturing her newly hatched chicks all the way until their first flight!
Did you know?
• Hummingbirds are the only bird that can fly backwards!
• A flock of hummingbirds can be referred to as a bouquet, a glittering, a hover, a shimmer, or a tune.
• Hummingbirds have no sense of smell but have great color detecting vision.
• The average weight of a hummingbird is less than a nickel!

Friday Movie Recommendation!

This week's movie recommendation comes from Meg with the 1991 comedy What About Bob? It can be watched for free on Amazon Prime and rented through all other major streaming services!
"What About Bob is a Randa family favorite movie starring Bill Murray as Bob Wiley; a looney patient of Dr Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfus) who goes on vacation. Bob Wiley feels that he can't function without his doctor so takes a trip to Lake Winnepesaukee to find him. It is a fun-filled, adventure which leaves the audience rooting for Bob who is very loveable while Dr Leo Marvin loses his professional composure and could end up in the looney bin himself." - Meg

The 57th March on Washington
From 1963 to 2020

Last Friday, August 28 marked the 57th anniversary of the historic 1963 March on Washington. Its full title was the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom but is also known as The Great March on Washington. "The purpose of the march was to advocate for the civil and economic rights of African Americans. At the march, Martin Luther King Jr., standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, delivered his historic "I Have a Dream" speech in which he called for an end to racism." - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/March_on_Washington_for_Jobs_and_Freedom
For even more on this iconic piece of American history check out the NAACP's website.
https://www.naacp.org/marchonwashington/

This last march echoed those same sentiments to a 2020 crowd with modernized concerns. Just as its predecessors, it was a rally in the name of social justice. It was organized by Reverend Al Sharpton and the National Action Network. This march's full title was the “Get Your Knee Off Our Necks” Commitment March on Washington. It "featured speeches from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial followed by a march to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial."
For more coverage and pictures from the event check out The Atlantic's article here.
