Claws VS. Nails
Animals are amazing and can make great lifelong friends. They cross the species barrier and become members of the family. Even though us humans are also a kind of animal you might notice a big difference between us and our smaller companions. No, I'm not talking about their fur. No, not the shape of their ears or their tails either! I'm talking about their claws. Why is it so many animals have claws while we humans have nails? Is there a difference between the two and if so what is it? Do any other animals besides humans have nails?

So we learned primates evolved to turn their claws into nails, but did you realize that there are actually other remnants of your past animal ancestry on your body? Some of the most obvious of these are your appendix and of course your tail bone (where our tails used to grow out of!), but even more surprising is the existence of our third eyelid.
Unfortunately this eyelid is "vestigial," meaning it a leftover remnant of something humans, or our predecessors, once had in the past. This video explains the origin and disappearance of this third eyelid along with another vestigial trait you can test at home to see if you have!

Friday Movie Recommendation!

This week's movie pick comes from Nancy with the 1994 Comedy/Drama Forrest Gump!
"My movie pick for this week is FORREST GUMP... a little bit of a comedy, a little bit of a drama! The movie follows Forrest from a little boy until he is a grown man, with a child of his own. It is a beautiful life story of a kind, gentle, loving, lovable, and caring person.
I like the way the movie follows Forrest through his life, but also adds real footage of real events. Young Forrest meets Elvis Presley, and Elvis incorporates Forrest's dance moves into his show... Forrest meets JFK at the White house... Forrest is given the medal of Honor by LBJ... Forrest is interviewed by a late night talk show host, seated next to John Lennon... Forrest runs cross country, and creates the SMILEY FACE!!! These are only a few of Forrest's life milestones, that are portrayed in the movie.
The movie is also filled with lots of sayings and witticisms (that we all repeat today!)..."Life is like a box of chocolates...", "Run Forrest, run"!..."What's normal anyways"!!
And if you are a music fan... this movie has an AMAZING soundtrack... from Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Wilson Picckett, Joan Baez, Jefferson Airplane... and MANY more artists!
This delightful movie makes me laugh, and makes me cry... and leaves me with a FORREST GUMP moral... BE KIND TO ALL!
So, pop some popcorn, sit back with friends and family and ENJOY!!!
Om Shanti" - Nancy

Mystery of the Deep:
Explore a Boston Shipwreck Live
In 1898 on Thanksgiving night a steam-powered paddleboat by the name of the S.S. Portland sank after it parted from Boston Harbor and encountered a massive storm. The ship now lays nearly 500 feet below the surface of the ocean off the coast of Gloucester. 122 years later a team of Scituate researchers are diving down into the deep to explore the underwater wreckage and see if they can figure out exactly why the boat sank.
The team is exploring using a remotely operated submersible named Pixel and streaming the footage straight back into their lab. They are also livestreaming some of the footage for all to see! Yesterday, today, and tomorrow (August 25-27) the team is streaming their discoveries on the National Marine Sanctuaries webpage following a schedule which can be found below!

100th Year Anniversary
of the Women's Right to Vote!

This year marks the 100th year anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment by Congress which allowed women the right to vote. The Amendment passed on June 4, 1919, but was not formally validated until August 18, 1920. August 26, 1920 was when the 19th Amendment was officially added to the U.S. Constitution. Women could finally vote.
But although women were finally able to vote it should also be noted that not all women, or groups of people, were given the luxury. People could still be turned away from the polls due to other factors such as race, and it wasn't until further in time that new laws were put into effect to finally allow voting opportunities to all, regardless of gender and race.
Below is a video with 6 surprising facts about the 19th Amendment including one about how a letter from somebody's mother got the Amendment ratified in Congress!
Looking for ways to help celebrate this achievement? The biggest way is to get out there and vote! But if you already have and are looking for something else why not

Why do we love pets?
It's no secret that us humans love our pets. Cats, dogs, hamsters, ferrets, lizards, birds, goats, the works. But when did we start bringing animals into our homes to live with us? And why? This short video explores the history and origins of many of our most beloved critters and how humans have adopted them into our families.
All around the world people have welcomed these special animals into their lives.
There is no doubt that one of the best things about pets are their ways to always make us smile. One of these two labradors needs to take special ear medicine, but their owner doesn't have the heart to tell the other they don't need it too. Watch his clever way to satisfy both dogs!

Let's Explore
a Puffin Burrow
Seal Island is an island located 21 miles off the coast of Maine. During the Spring and Summer months ground-dwelling, aquatic birds called puffins nest and breed there.
Although the puffins have already left their burrows for the season, Explore.org's livecam website has provided us with a big highlight reel to hold us over until they return next Spring! You can watch them prep their nest, guard over their egg, and see an adorable puffin chick.
https://explore.org/livecams/puffins/puffin-burrow-cam?
(Content provided by Cindy!)
A baby puffin is called a "puffling"! How cute is that?
"Puffins lay one egg that is incubated in turn by each adult for approximately 39-43 days (about six weeks!). After the egg hatches, the chick—called a puffling—stays in the burrow and awaits food from its parents. The puffling grows to full size in about six weeks and then flies away from the island to spend its next three to four years floating on the high seas."
Unlike their very similar looking flightless cousins, the penguins, puffins can actually fly!
"Puffins can fly for long distances but it takes a lot of work, they need to flap their wings as much as 300-400 beats every minute to stay in the air. And their landings need some work, they often trip over their own feet. Puffins have more fun once they get in the water. Puffins dive into the water, going as deep as 60 meters. Underwater they swim with their wings, using their big feet to steer, the rest of the time they swim on the surface of the water, like ducks."
For more puffin facts (and to hear a puffin chick begging for food) click here and here!
Did you know?
The puffins might have flown their coop, but there are loads of other livecams still going from an elephant park in South Africa to future service dog great dane puppies! There are even relaxing streams such as one dedicated to watching the Aurora Borealis. Take a look.

Friday Movie Recommendation!

This week's movie recommendation comes jointly from Ian and Lauren with Ron Howard's 2016 documentary The Beatles: Eight Days a Week. The film "examines the early years of the Beatles, from their club dates in Liverpool, England, to their concert tours in Europe and the rest of the world." Both Ian and Lauren have been watching it together on the weekends. It can be watched for free with a Hulu subscription or rented through other movie streaming services like Amazon Prime.

Happy
National Potato Day!
How much do we love these special spuds? So much so that we've dedicated August 19th as National Potato Day! We love to eat them, but how much do we actually know about the humble potato? This short and quickfire facts video is a great primer for potato people!
And no, I don't mean these potato people.

Speaking of which...
The Mr. Potato Head toy was first manufactured by Hasbro in 1952 and earned the title of very first toy to ever be advertised on television!
This year in our LES garden we planted potatoes for the very first time! It's incredible to think that just by putting pieces of one potato into the dirt you can produce so many more. Join the host of True Food TV as she takes us to a potato farm and teaches us how a potato is taken from the soil to end up in your bag of potato chips.
At the end she provides us a recipe for healthy and delicious simple roasted smashed potatoes!
Saturn Trivia Answer!
Saturn's famous rings are made primarily out of what?
A.) Gas
B.) Rock
C.) Pieces of Ice
"Saturn's rings are thought to be pieces of comets, asteroids or shattered moons that broke up before they reached the planet, torn apart by Saturn's powerful gravity. They are made of billions of small chunks of ice and rock coated with another material such as dust. The ring particles mostly range from tiny, dust-sized icy grains to chunks as big as a house. A few particles are as large as mountains."

Summertime on Saturn

Back on July 4, NASA'S Hubble Space Telescope snapped this incredible photo of Saturn. Its Northern hemisphere is facing toward Earth and getting hit by more sunlight. This picture is part of the Outer Planets Atmospheres Legacy (OPAL) project "which aims to improve our understanding of atmospheric dynamics and evolution on gas giant planets such as Saturn and Jupiter."
The bands and rings of Saturn are also incredibly vivid and detailed. Can you spot two of Saturn's moons also in this picture?

Who was Georgia O'Keeffe?
Think of a few famous artists off the top of your head. Picasso, Van Gogh, and Monet likely come to mind, but what about Georgia O'Keeffe? You have very likely seen a lot of her paintings without even realizing it!
She is best known for her close up paintings of flowers, but her work extends far beyond just that. This short video talks about her life from the very beginning of her artistic career to her death in 1986 at the age of 98 (when she was still painting!).
See if you can recognize any pieces of artwork in this video. It includes 30 of O'Keefee's most famous works.

Friday Movie Recommendation!

Phyllis brings us our Friday Movie Recommendation with the Academy Award winning 1997 historical romance film Titanic!
"One of my most favorite movies is Titanic. It is a wonderful love story that takes place on the ship the Titanic which hit an iceberg and sank in 1912. It depicts what life was like back in 1912. The main characters are Rose and Jack who meet on the ship and fall in love. Rose comes from a very wealthy aristocratic family, and Jack is a poor working man who shows Rose what the important things are in life. No matter how many times I see it I still cry," - Phyllis

MORE Frozen Treat Recipes
Easy Sorbet You Can Make in a Day!
In a past website posting we showed you that you don't need an ice cream maker to make some great ice cream, and the same goes for the delicious cold treat known as sorbet! These recipes use only a few simple, easy to access ingredients and can be made dairy free as well. Perfect for these sweltering Summer days.
A Fudgsicle You Can Eat for Breakfast?
If you're in the mood for something a bit more fudgey then you may want to try this experiment gone right. Lauren took this recipe for a vegan chocolate mousse and froze it into ice pop molds. The result was a delicious (and arguably even healthy) Fudgsicle! Replacing some of the avocado with bananas or even adding bananas to the mix just brings it up from a 10 to an 11! It's fun to play around and add your own spin.

Bee Progressive, Bee Bee Progressive!
Spring and Summer time in New England typically brings us no shortage of these small and busy insects. We're often doing our best to avoid them and their scary stingers, but if you could get down to their level and see what a bee sees you'd experience some incredible sights!
Did you know there are only about 100 males in a whole hive of honeybees? Or that they communicate the location of prime food spots by performing a dance? This video gives us only a brief glimpse into the wild world of the honeybee.

6 Simple Things You Can Do Right Now to Help Save the Bees

Bees are a vital species to our ecosystem that helps maintain its delicate balance. Bees help pollinate our plants which in turn helps form the basis of sustaining much of the life on this planet!

More than a little off the top!

If you've been on our Zoom sessions for the past couple weeks you probably noticed a certain person's hair got a lot shorter. That is because Mary has continued in her tradition of donating her hair to others in need. This time she decided to donate it to an organization called Maggie's Wigs 4 Kids. It's "a non-profit organization providing kids 3-18 new hair, new hope, and a chance to be themselves."
Mary's donated 'do will go to help a child in need! (Amendment: Mary actually ended up donating to Locks of Love, but do also check out this place if you're ever looking to donate hair!)

The Pacifist Memorial
Tidy Up Crew

There's not doubt that last week's storm made a big mess. The Pacifist Memorial was littered with twigs, leaves, and branches and was looking pretty untidy because of it. But a last minute clean up crew came to help spiffy the place back up. Cindy raked the pathways clear, Lauren picked debris off the lawn, and Chris came by with the lawn mower to help tackle that unruly grass.
By the end the memorial was looking clean as a whistle!

Now that would make one BIG bird's nest!

Meet the Happiest Animal on Earth
The Quokka!
The quokka is a marsupial native to Australia. Australia is a country quite notable for its dangerous and fierce wildlife, yet the quokka is an entirely different case.
They thrive primarily off the Western coast of mainland Australia on an island named Rottnest Island where they are pretty safe from dangerous predators. Not to mention the abundance of free-roaming and friendly quokkas on the island draws in so much tourism that it's actually benefiting them! It's a unique case of how humans are unknowingly encouraging the growth and safety of a species.
There's a lot to learn and love about these little guys. Give this video a watch if you want to find out more about this special wallaby that's all smiles.
If you'd like to see even more of Rottnest Island and the amazing quokkas that live there check out this video as well!

Friday Movie Recommendation!

Today's movie comes from Cindy who recommends Disney's 2005 fantasy/adventure The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe! It is an adaptation of the first book in the Chronicles of Narnia series written by C.S. Lewis.
"One of my favorite movies is The Chronicles of Narnia. My family has a tradition of watching this movie on Christmas night, after all the festivities are over. I am not usually a fantasy fan, but I love this one. Tilda Swinton did a phenomenal job as the White Witch. I also love the part with Santa because he looks so real! I have never read the book, but it's on my list to read one day. The movie is on the longer side, though it keeps you entertained the entire time. " - Cindy

Let's Get Organized!
As we're all stuck more and more inside we've probably started to find that our surroundings are feeling a lot more crowded. We're spending more time in our houses which leads way to the development of more clutter. You might be finding you want to refresh your environment and take advantage of this extra time indoors to make your living quarters looking nice. You're spending all this time in this space, so why not make it more personal and enjoyable!

Even if you have a lot of space these ideas will help keep your spaces tidy!
One of the leading causes of modern day clutter are wires and cords. Each of your electronic devices have at least one if not more, and managing them in ways to keep them out of the way, looking nice, and identifiable can be tough. 15 DIY Cord Organizers gives you a few simple solutions for straightening up those wiry issues. It has everything from using plastic bread bag closures for cord tags to using Lego figures as cable clips!

My last piece of organizational advice is to use Command hooks! Over-the-door and over-the-drawer hooks and baskets are fantastic space savers, but not every door and drawer fits them. And what if you want to hang something somewhere else? Enter Command Hooks. If properly applied they are easily removable and movable if you dislike their location, can be stuck to most any surface, and transform your space from drab to fab. Here are a few examples of ways I've used Command hooks to tidy up my home!
Doors, dressers, walls... nothing is safe from Command hooks!

Snooze for your Health -
The Importance and Impact of Sleep
When we lay down in bed and close our eyes to sleep we don't generally give a second thought as to what is going on inside our brains. It is true that sleep is a time to let our brains rest after busy days, but it's actually functioning more than you might realize and performing crucial tasks to help keep you healthy. This video explores how both sleep and memory are connected and some important ways sleep impacts a person's brain.
A walk through the stages of sleep
What's the difference between REM and non-REM sleep? Sleep occurs in what we refer to as "stages." Each stage has a different effect on the body and are all important. This video by neuroscientist Matt Walker explains what each of these stages are and how they all function together to keep your body healthy and strong.

The Little Free Library Hits a 100,000 Milestone!

If you've visited LES in the past few years you've likely noticed the little sheltered box sitting atop the white picket fence outside the yard. It's full of books and, even more recently, non-perishable food items. That is our very own Little Free Library, and it is just one in part of the now 100,00 that are available worldwide! People are free to both take and leave books for others to enjoy and share. You can return it when you're done, keep it, or put a different book back in its place.
The monumental 100,000th Little Free Library was granted to the Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans in Houston, Texas on March 11 as part of 100 new boxes granted by the Little Free Library organization!
Recipients of this grant "include schools, literacy groups, Native American reservations, health centers, homeless shelters, laundromats, and more."
