EASTER!

This Sunday, April 4 is Easter! Easter is one of the biggest holiday celebrations around and has existed for a very long time. How long? Take a look at this short history of Easter to find out and learn a few new facts along the way!

Easter Snacks!

Easter is host to some of the most delectable and fun treats, many of which are easy to make at home! Whether you can't make it to the store, looking for an activity to do, a gift to give, or just want something fresh and homemade we've got you covered with even more Easter themed goodies galore!
These bunny sugar cookies are as adorable as they are delicious. And the best part? You don't even need a bunny cookie cutter to make them!

And with a few ingredients you can make your very own version at home!
Of course this wouldn't be an LES recipe list without at least one snack mix! This "Bunny Bait" Spring Snack Mix is easy, cheap, and most importantly delicious!
It's also completely customizable. Add and remove anything you like!

Friday Movie Recommendation!

The Lion King.jpg

This week's movie recommendation comes from Elisabeth with the original 1994 animated musical from Disney The Lion King! It's a story about a young lion cub named Simba, eager to take over the throne and take his place in the cicle of life, but his evil uncle Scar wants the throne instead and will stop at nothing to get what he wants. It's a story about finding yourself and your place in the world and doing what is right. It can be streamed for free with Disney+ or rented through most major streaming service.

"It's a great movie, and I love Scar. I recommend it because it's funny, and the coconut scene with Scar and Zazu is a very funny scene." - Elisabeth

Make way for the

Easter Bunny!

We've been asking this question since we were kids. What does a magical rabbit have to do with the holiday of Easter, and why does it hide colorful eggs? For many people Easter is an honored holiday full of what may be considered very odd traditions, but there are origins to them all! This short video teaches all about some of Easter's most cherished traditions.
It's not even all about the Bunny. What country has an Easter Cuckoo and which one an Easter Fox? Watch this video to find out!
Everyone knows what a rabbit is, but not everyone knows what the difference is between them and a hare. Both are small, furry critters with longs ears and buck teeth, but, like wolves and coyotes, looking and acting similar does not make something the same. So what makes a hare a hare and a rabbit a rabbit?

Did you know?

It's actually very bad for rabbits to eat a lot of carrots. Carrots are loaded with sugar and should only be fed to them in moderation, just like candy. In reality rabbits love to chow down on a variety of foods like grasses, flowers, and various other vegetables!
Now let us consider arguably the world's most famous rabbit, Bugs Bunny... or should he be named Bugs Hare?
Nick Uhas likes to perform "Cartoon Science" and try to answer the questions nobody is asking. Today's question is, "How many carrots does Bugs Bunny eat in a day?" To determine precisely how much beta carotene this toon could chow down we first have to come to one important conclusion: Is Bugs Bunny actually a bunny at all?
Monster.jpg

Monster says: "Chocolate and jellybeans for people and carrots for rabbits. Easter's got it made!"

What will the world look like in 250 Million Years?

Many of you might already be aware that millions of years ago our planet looked a lot different than it does today. All of our continents used to be connected into one super-continent called Pangea, but over time the land masses moved and formed the countries and map we know of now. But the forces that moved the continents are not done yet... so what will the Earth look like in the far off future?
The Map Men are back to explain how continental drift works and some possible future scenarios for our planet (with some witty dry British humor on the side).

What If?...

But what if Pangea had never broken apart? What if the world remained one giant land mass instead of the many continents we know of today?
Let's explore this scenario a bit more with this short video.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CHRIS!!

Happy birthday to the one and only Chris Randa!

Happy Passover!

This Saturday, March 27 at sundown will begin the first night of the 7 (or 8 depending on your denomination) day Jewish holiday of Passover! It's a holiday of celebration, freedom, and, of course, lots of eating!
So what exactly is Passover? Some might describe it as a big celebratory meal, but it's a bit more complicated than that. Our friend Mayim Bialik is here to save the day again and explain some of the basics of this very ritual heavy holiday.
Last year I shared a recipe for Matzah Balls, one of the most popular (and delicious) offerings at a Passover meal. This year I thought I would share one of my personal favorites, Charoset!
Charoset is actually one of the 6 food items part of the traditional Seder Plate, a special plate dedicated to displaying foods with symbolic meanings to the Passover story. In the case of Charoset it is meant to represent the cement used by the Jewish slaves to build Egyptian structures.
Charoset, like most recipes, comes in many different varieties and can be easily adapted. The one thing that has to stay consistent is that it's thick (or chunky), it's sticky, and it's sweet!

The Great 2021 Afikomen Hunt!

The Afikomen is a piece of matzah that is hidden somewhere in the house. Part of the Seder involves a search for the missing matzah, and the first one to find it wins a prize.

Friday Movie Recommendation!

theprinceofegypt.jpg

This week's movie recommendation comes from Lauren with the 1998 DreamWorks animated musical The Prince of Egypt. It is a retelling of the story of Moses, a Jewish slave who was adopted into the royal Egyptian family as a child. It is his story of discovery and his quest to free his people from bondage, even if that means fighting against everything he's ever known or loved, including his own brother. It can be watched for free through Pluto and Peacock or rented through most major streaming services.

"This movie really is a piece of cinematic majesty. You don't have to know anything about the tale beforehand to be gripped by its masterful storytelling and awe-inspiring visuals. The dynamic between Moses and his brother Ramses is so well humanized and truly heartbreaking at times. The award winning music is a real treat to listen to too. It's my personal favorite film to watch each Passover!" - Lauren

GARDEN CLUB @ The Garden!

Spring means we can start planning the annual LES garden, which is just what we met up yesterday to do!

It's almost Holi:

The Festival of Colors!

Have you ever wanted a day that's dedicated to partying and getting messy? One where incredible colors dance around you (and on you) as far as the eyes can see? Then you might enjoy the Hindu festival of Holi, aptly referred to as the Festival of Colors!
Even if you wouldn't want to join the crowd it's certainly a sight to behold from afar! Holi starts this Sunday, March 28 and ends the following day.
Holi looks like fun, but what's it actually all about? In this short video some children give us a basic rundown on this very interactive celebration.
Imagine you're doing your job when all of this starts happening around you. One cameraman filming monkeys in India just so happened to be around on this special day and got to experience the celebration first hand!

Moving to the Beat of the Drum

Back in 2008 the Summer Olympic games in Beijing opened to 2,008 drummers drumming in rhythm to an awe-struck crowd.
"2,008 drummers played the bronze Fou drums and sang the quote from The Analects of Confucius written 2000 years ago: "Isn’t it delightful to have friends coming from afar?” to welcome friends from all over the world."
Like drums, gongs are another instrument that is played by striking it with another object. These forms of musical instruments are known as percussion instruments.
Liam Williamson is a rock music drummer from London, but how do you think he'd do when it comes to playing an actual rock? The British Museum invited Williamson to give it a go on some of their authentic ancient rock gongs that they have in their collection.
Drums and other percussion instruments are part of musical cultures from all over the world and are one of the first forms of musical instruments we know.
Believe it or not, flutes are also one of the oldest known instruments, with the oldest musical instrument in the world ever found being a flute from between 42,000 and 43,000 years old!

Communing with Nature

... and Communicating with Plants?

Hello!

Before we know it the Earth will be sprouting fresh greenery as far as our eyes can see. We know as well as any not to take plants for granted. There's a lot more going on with these passive creatures then what one might think, but did you know that some plants can count?
You may remember Greg Gage from a past TED Talk. He's the eccentric neuroscientist who hooked two people up so that one person's arm could control the other's. Well he's back at it again, but this time with plants! Does a plant have a brain? And if not then how and why do some plants, like a venus flytrap, move so quickly? Can one plant control the movements of another? Watch this video to find out!
Do you like to communicate with plants in some way? I hear they love singing!

Hello SPRING!

The birds are singing, the air is getting lighter, and the ice is melting into river creeks. Smells like Spring to me!
The first day of Spring was last Saturday, March 20!
I bet we all feel like those cows right about now! With Spring finally here we are getting closer to being able to stretch our legs and enjoy the great outdoors once again. After a Winter cooped up inside our own barns it's a welcome beam of sunshine.
These cows were inside their barn to keep warm all cold season long, but now they are out again and fancy free.

Meet the Dazzling Flying Machines of the Future

Back in 2016, engineer Raffaello D'Andrea took to the TED Talk stage to show us the new age of drones capable of autonomous flight. This means that the machines aren't being controlled by a person with a remote control but are moving independently on their own.
What are some of the uses we might have for these flying machines and can they be just as beautiful as they are useful? If all of that was possible back in 2016 just think of the wonders we can be doing with technology right now!

The Art of Sound -

Making Sound Effects for Movies

We love to watch movies, but we often take for granted all of the hard work and different parts that come together to form something like The Matrix or The Little Mermaid. One of these key movie components is called foley. Foley is "the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to films, videos, and other media in post-production." A foley artist is a person responsible for the creating these sound effects.
A lot of the sound effects you hear in movies aren't the actual sounds coming from what you see on screen. And, believe it or not, they might be coming from some very weird objects!
A prime example of foley being used inside a film for comedic effect is the famous coconut horse scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
327-3279667_shell-clipart-small-clipart-
Fans of scary movies might already know how important sound is in the movie A Quiet Place. There were some very thoughtful choices the foley artists had to make to produce just the right sounds for this movie. Have you ever had to tase a grape for your job before?

The Strange History of

The Leprechaun

When we think about St. Patrick's Day a few things come to mind. One of these things will most likely be the leprechaun, a mythical figure from Irish folklore. But as the Youtuber Tale Foundry puts it, "We see them all over the place here in America--on our cereal boxes, in cartoons, in parades--but what are leprechauns? Where did they come from, and why are they so iconic?"
This short video explores the history of the tale of the magical leprechaun and just why it's so common to see them here in America but less so in their native land of Ireland.
If you could think of the most famous and iconic leprechaun of all time who would you say it is? A lot of you might think of Lucky, the brand mascot for Lucky Charms cereal.
But did you know that Lucky wasn't the only potential mascot? Lucky Charms underwent a lot of changes over the years since its first release in 1964.

Nothing Slows Them Down!

Fast and Furriest

Animals can have disabilities just like a person can, and, just like a person, they find ways to not let their handicaps slow them down. Meet Lil' Bunny Sue Roux, a siamese mix cat who was born without her front two legs. Because she's missing two legs she hops around on her hind ones just like a kangaroo.
It's not uncommon for animals to use wheelchairs either, such as with this little pig born with a deformity of his back legs. His vet adopted him from his previous owner and has been upgrading his set of wheels as he grows bigger each and every year!
And if you think this is exclusive to just land animals then think again! Have you ever seen a goldfish with a wheelchair? (Or rather a floatchair!)

Spring Forward and Fall Back

This Sunday, March 14 is Daylight Savings Time which means you should set your clocks forward 1 hour before heading to bed this Saturday evening.
But as you may already be aware of time zones are not the same all around the world. They're a notoriously fussy business when you try to factor in things like country borders and the actual rotation of the Earth. Map Men is a Youtube channel devoted to exploring and explaining the strange little intricacies of maps, and in this video they provide a very quirky take on the world's silliest time zones.
This Sunday, March 14 is also PI Day! No, not "Pie" Day (that's apparently on January 23). Pi as in the number 3.14 that continues on into infinity.
The date 3/14 looks similar to 3.14, so people choose to celebrate this mathematical powerhouse on this day every year!

Friday Movie Recommendation!

Disney_-_The_Luck_of_the_Irish.jpg

This week's movie recommendation comes from Cal with the 2001 Disney fantasy/sports film The Luck of the Irish! 15 year-old basketball player Kyle Johnson owes his good luck to the gold coin charm he has, but an evil leprechaun named Seamus McTierman stole this coin. Now Kyle needs to break Seamus' magical spell and get his gold coin back! It can be streamed online with Disney+ and rented through most major streaming services.

"It stars Ryan Merriman as a half leprechaun who’s mother is a leprechaun. Since it’s going to be St. Patrick’s Day I think it’s a good movie to watch. It’s a really good movie to watch if you’re Irish." - Cal

International Women's Day

Last Monday, March 8 was International Women's Day! It's a global holiday to "commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women."
It's a sad truth that many women's achievements often go unacknowledged, so it makes sense to have a holiday dedicated to finally giving credit where credit is due. "It is also a focal point in the women's rights movement, bringing attention to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence against women."*
Pluto the pup here is all about celebrating these incredible people and has some great quotes to share in honor of the holiday.

Cold as ICE

Playing a musical instrument is not a simple task, but now imagine that instrument is also made of an enormous chunk of solid ice. That was the dream of Swedish musician and ice artist Tim Linhart. Playing an ice instrument has its challenges for sure, but the rewards you get are absolutely worth it!
Linhart is not the only person to have these icy ambitions. Norwegian musician Terje Isungset is also a well known instrument designer who uses ice as his medium.
