Return of the Ancients:

7 Animals We Thought Were Extinct (but actually aren't!)

What's better than fondly remembering an animal from years gone by? Finding out it's still around and kicking! That happens to be the case for these 7 animals that people once thought to be extinct. Lucky for us we were wrong, and these windows into the history of nature past are still alive even to this very day.

Purple Cup Survey Responses!

You spoke and we listened. This is what everybody had to say.

What is one extinct animal you would like to see make a comeback?

• Saber-toothed tiger
• Saber-toothed tiger
• The woolly mammoth
• The megalodon lol
• Araripesuchus and Kaprosuchus, they were a group of crocodiles that had longer limbs and were more agile like a dog

Friday Movie Recommendation!

Amazing Spider Man.jpg

This week's movie recommendation comes jointly from Bobby with the 2012 Marvel cinematic universe action movie The Amazing Spider-Man! "Abandoned by his parents and raised by an aunt and uncle, teenager Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man, is trying to sort out who he is and exactly what his feelings are for his first crush, Gwen Stacy. When Peter finds a mysterious briefcase that was his father's, he pursues a quest to solve his parents' disappearance."  You can rent the movie through most major streaming services!

"I like the characters, especially Spider-Man who is my favorite. I like when he does the motion with his hands to shoot the webs. I recommend it to people because the guy who plays Spider-Man is a good actor." - Bobby

What can be more iconic than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? It's hard to think of a period before this meal time staple was packed neatly into our brown paper school lunch bags, but as it turns out it's actually a relatively recent invention. Life advice and rules to live by from Travis Roy

cut.jpg
Travis Roy was an incredible person. He was an American ice hockey player who, only just 11 seconds into his first college hockey game, had a collision and became paralyzed from the neck down. He went on to devote his life to making the lives of other spinal cord injury survivors better through his organization the Travis Roy Foundation up until his death just last October. It is still going strong to this day, and his legacy still lives on.
In Book Club we have been reading his autobiographical book Eleven Seconds: A Story of Tragedy, Courage & Triumph. One of the parts of the book that has stood out was his detailed list of rules he'd written for himself prior to his accident. Here is (a condensed version of) what he wrote:

Travis Roy's

10 Rules of Life

1.) Be Yourself
2.) Never take anything for granted
3.) Set Goals
4.) Resist peer pressure
5.) Respect
6.) Your friends are one of your most important aspects of your life.
7.) There are different types of love: love for sports, love for friends, love for my girlfriend, and love for my family. I also feel that everybody has their own definition of love and there is no right or wrong way to love.
8.) Family
9.) Have pride in yourself, pride in your family, and pride in your friends. This should always be remembered and acknowledged.
10.) There will always be more lessons to be learned.
Do you have any additional rules of life that you follow?
~*~ You can join us in reading Travis Roy's book in Book Club every Friday at 11 AM. We'd love to see you there! ~*~

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MAUREEN!!

This Sunday is Moe's special day, so let's wish her a great one!

It's a dog! No, it's a wallaby! No, it's a...

Thylacine!

Nature is truly amazing. Not only can it produce incredible and wonderful creatures of all different shapes and sizes, but it can do it more than once with completely unrelated animals. Enter the thylacine! This Australian mammal once inhabited the island of Tasmania (hence its nickname the Tasmanian wolf or the Tasmanian tiger) until it was driven to extinction. What is truly fascinating about this animal is its uncanny resemblance to a dog. But is it actually a canine?

Gone but not forgotten... or not gone at all?

The last known record of a living thylacine was back in 1930, but something miraculous might be on the horizon... they may possibly still be alive! Cam footage caught by researchers in February show what appears to not only be a thylacine but also some babies as well. If this turns out to be true then it means the thylacine is no longer considered an extinct species!

Friday Movie Recommendation!

51gt+PfrpvL._AC_.jpg

This week's movie recommendation comes from Phil with the 2006 Disney sports drama Glory Road! "After being appointed the new coach of the 1966 Texas Miners, Don Haskins decides to build a team based on talent rather than race. The conservative townsfolk balk at the new racially diverse lineup despite the fact that the team is winning all their games. When black players like Bobby Joe Hill and team captain Harry Flournoy begin to dominate the court with flashy moves, the racial tension increases, jeopardizing the future of the team." It can be watched free with Disney+ or rented through most streaming services.

"Glory Road is about the Texas Miners basketball team from 1966. It’s a true story. They had 7 African American people on the team. Remember this was during the Civil Rights movement. The coach in the National Title game played all black players vs an all white Kentucky team. It's on Disney+." - Phil

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CINDY!!

Happy birthday to the one and only Cindy Loo!

Happy Purim!

Happy Purim, everybody! Tonight at sundown the holiday will officially begin, but what exactly is it? Purim is sort of like a Jewish Halloween, but it's a lot more than just that. Its roots lie in a very special story that is traditionally told each and every holiday. Special customs derive directly from the tale.
It's a tale that celebrates triumph over adversity, political activism, and a lot of feminism! Oh, and eating little triangle cookies to spite a guy who wears a very silly hat.
If that story of Purim went a little too fast for you our good friend Mayim Bialik has your back. She presents another short retelling of the tale along with a few extra holiday facts.
Hamantaschen (the plural form of hamantash) come in all flavors. They are the most iconic food from Purim celebrations and can be filled with anything your stomach can think of.
They are also pretty easy to make. Here is one recipe for them and how to achieve their signature tricorner shape!

Hoist the sails!

Today we're learning about

Sea Shanties

A few weeks back in Music Club Cindy shared with us the musical art of the sea shanty! As you'll find out from the video above the sea shanty is a lot more than just a fun and impressive song to sing as you're sailing across the wide ocean waves.
So then what is a sea shanty? Why and how did they originate, and what is the special service that they provide to sailors?
One of the biggest aspects of the sea shanty is its inherent sense of community and camaraderie. They are meant to be sung together, either in unison or as a call-and-reponse. Perhaps this may be why they've taken places like TikTok by storm with viral video mashups just like this one here.
Roll the Old Chariot is one of Cindy's personal favorites. David Coffin leads leads the crowd in this shanty in Portsmouth, NH during the 2010 Portsmouth Maritime Folk Festival.
Lauren is not shy with her love of all things piratey and shanty. The Pyrates Royale is a favorite band of her own, and their rendition of Mist-Cover'd Mountains of Home is a good example of why that is.

What is the

Biggest Organism on Earth?

If you really think about it, humans are pretty tiny. Ants are even tinier, and to them we are enormous mountains drifting from place to place (sometimes with yummy food). But what if we viewed things from an ant's perspective?
It's a lot easier than you think. Look around you, and I bet you will see many living organisms that far outsize you. You probably won't even have to look as far as out your window! There are plenty of giant creatures out there, but what is the biggest organism on Earth? This little video aims to answer just this very question.

Learning who is

Amanda Gorman

We all recognize Amanda Gorman for her incredible inspiring poem she both wrote and recited at president Joe Biden's inauguration last month, but did you know that she is a person with speech and hearing disabilities? Amanda has had a speech and auditory processing disorder since she was born.
Cindy showed everyone this video and the one below in a meeting of Happy Hands Club. It just goes to show that talent, hard work, and courage does not discriminate!
The Moth is a spoken word show where people come to the stage to share their own personal stories. Back in 2017, Amanda Gorman took to The Moth stage to share one such story of her own about the time she tried out to play Nala in the Broadway musical rendition of The Lion King.

Friday Movie Recommendation!

Kipo.jpg

This week's recommendation is actually a series! Lauren recommends that people check out the Netflix original cartoon Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. It's 200 years into the future and mutated animals have taken over Earth's surface. Human kind has been forced underground to survive or risk roughing it on the surface where danger lurks at every turn. Kipo was just another "burrow girl" until she got swept to the surface world. Now it is up to her, the strange friends she met along the way, and her overly friendly and optimistic spirit to get back home, set things right again, and discover who she truly is. Kipo can be streamed for free on Netflix.

"This show really shows you that you can't judge a book by its cover. There is a good to be found in people, but some just need the right push to make it shine through. It's a fantastic lesson about community and getting along with everyone, no matter who they might be, and how differences should be embraced. It also has an amazing soundtrack, edge-of-your-seat story, and hilarious comedy to boot. I highly recommend you give it a watch!" - Lauren

Sacré bleu!

It was MARDI GRAS!

What's purple and gold and green all over? Why it's the carnival of Mardi Gras, of course! Tuesday, February 16 was Mardi Gras, the day of Fat Tuesday, a celebration with parades, cakes, lavish clothing, and crazy over the top partying that dates back to 1699. Yes, you heard that correct.
Mardi Gras is celebrated around the world, but here in America it's the French American city of New Orleans that takes the literal King Cake in terms of US celebrations!
Have you ever heard of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro? That is the Brazilian celebration of the very same holiday!
Why the colors Purple, Gold, and Green?
The colors were selected in 1872 by Rex, one of the biggest Carnival Krewes (the organizations that stage the parades and festivities). At the time they had no meaning,  but in 1892 they declared they meant this:
Purple - Justice
Green - Faith
Gold - Power
I'm good luck!!
What better way to celebrate than with a cake, and Mardi Gras has a very special one it uses for the occasion. The King Cake is a dessert available in the period between King's Day and Mardi Gras day and has been a tradition for many years. So where does the "king" in king cake originate and what's the deal with that little plastic baby? Watch this short mouth-watering video to find out!
Jaw-dropping, spectacular, awe worthy parade floats are the bread and butter of the Mardi Gras parade. When you go to one of these parades you aren't just a spectator, you're an active participant.
Welcome to Mardi Gras World, a walk-through exhibit of parade floats and festive costuming from celebrations past and present! Join us in reveling at these incredible displays and learning a little bit about them in the process.

This week's movie recommendation comes from Sadie Randa and is dictated by her "Gaga" (Meg). Sadie recommends the 2017 Musical/Drama The Greatest Showman starring Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zak Efron, and Zendaya! It can be streamed for free through Disney+ and Hulu and rented through most major streaming services.

"I love the movie called The Greatest Showman because it is a true story about a man named P.T. Barnum who started The Greatest Show on Earth.  It is funny and has great music and costumes and beautiful horses.  My favorite songs are "Rewrite The Stars" and "To The Other Side." I love the Trapeze Girl, and have a costume like her.  There is also a Bearded Lady!  My favorite part of the movie is at the end when he rides an elephant home to see his family.  I have watched the movie 6 times, and I am going to watch it Saturday on Zoom with my grandma Gaga.  Hope you like it!" - Sadie

Have you ever seen a reptile that could fit on the head of a matchstick and is no larger than the size of your fingernail? Just the other week scientists made a fantastic discovery: possibly the tiniest reptile in the world, the nano-chameleon!
Nano-chameleons are a species of chameleons from the island of Madagascar. The females are larger than males measuring in around 29 mm in length. Males are only 22 mm long! They do not change colors like other chameleon species and prefer living on the forest floor rather than in the trees.
So next time you're walking through the forest be careful... that bug might actually be a lizard!
